Headmaster’s House, Tiverton

Client: Blundell’s School
Area: 230 m²
Stage: Completed in August 2008
Building costs: £275k
Description: New Dwelling

It was considered that the former siting was not ideal in that it would take up an intensively-used playing field which, being located opposite the school is both convenient and easily supervised. Consideration was therefore given to an alternative site in the extreme south west corner of the Preparatory School grounds, adjacent Tidcombe Field. This location has the benefit of better self containment but, more importantly, it does not take up any of the areas occupied by the sports pitches.

The design comprises a 4 bedroom property with a single storey eaves line fronting public viewpoints rising to a conventional 2 storey profile facing private garden areas. The appearance of the scheme is simple and robust in treatment with the use of roughcast render and weatherboarded elevations as distinct from the more “urban” treatment of the other Preparatory School buildings.
