All Weather Floodlit Sports Pitch, Tiverton

Client: Blundell’s School
Area: 7,500 m²
Stage: Completed in June 2009
Building costs: £450k
Description: New Facility

The development involves a second full size “sand-dressed” synthetic grass hockey pitch with fencing and floodlights. The project also includes the provision of a “Warm-up” area, a spectator area, to be located between the existing and new Hockey pitches and various other minor works such as the provision of access footpaths and relocation of one of the “Dug-outs” / Goal store areas. The site of the new hockey pitch was occupied by a natural grass Rugby pitch and is to the immediate east of the existing artificial grass Hockey pitch.

The main pitch is 101.4mtrs x 63.0mtrs plus a “Dug-out / Goal-Store area of 3.0 mtrs x 24.0 mtrs. There was the need for a similar “Dug-out” area to be formed on the west side of the existing artificial grass pitch. The Spectator Area is located between the entire length of the new and existing pitches. The “Warm-Up” area / Single Tennis Court is located at the north-west corner of the new pitch. The main playing surface is a green “sand dressed” artificial turf conforming to the very latest advances in sports pitch technology and very similar in appearance to natural turf to reduce its visual impact, with lining integral with the fabric of the surface. The provision of floodlighting improves the potential and the capacity of the pitch to accommodate time-tabled sports lessons, training sessions and matches. The pitch, orientated approximately north-south, in line with the existing all-weather pitch, has been designed in accordance with the latest regulations for competitive Hockey.

The surface will promote a high standard of play, meet the aspirations of the school and will also be suitable for Tennis in the summer. The pitch was laid on a porous bitumen macadam sub-base to ensure the accuracy of the finished surface.
